Shaina N.C and CPAA Acknowledge Women Achievers

A commendable way to acknowledge brilliant achievements of women from all walks of life was a prestigious function - 'Hobby Ideas Women Achievers'. In its fifth year now, it commemorated and acknowledged the efforts put in by 42 stalwarts from different streams of society. This unique show, along with Cancer Patients Aids Association (CPAA) brought the celebrity women achievers to the fore sporting ensembles especially created by renowned drape designer Shaina N.C. of Golden Thimble.
The Women Achievers show was a charity event in aid of CPAA organized by Shaina N.C. This event is her brainchild and she makes earnest efforts into conceptualizing the show each year with a spectacularly different appeal.
Adding some more glam and glitz to this event was renowned choreographer Hemant Trivedi.
In one of her sequences Shaina N. C. showed hand painted sarees using Feviycryl colors. She remarked, "Glamour without a purpose is meaningless. The idea of this show is that people go home with a message and sympathize to a cause of their own choice. Women in this show are from different walks of life and people can indeed identify with them "Its little wonder that established designer Shaina NC used the Fevicryl colors in her ensembles this year for the entire look of the apparel obtained a pretty, shimmering look.
Women celebrities such as Nauheed Cyrusi, Vidya Malvade, Ishita Arun, Perizaad Zorabian, Nisha Zaveri, Farah Siddique, Manasi Joshi Roy, Sandhya Shetty, Shonali Nagrani, Leena Mogre, Sakshi Tanwar, Gautami Kapoor, walked down the ramp in colourful sarees.
Aditi Gowitrikar was the beautiful compeer, with the forever-elegant Waheeda Rehaman as the Chief Guest, who said, "For the Cancer Aids Association, we as responsible citizens should come together and forward this organization". Nana Choudasma, member of the organizing team said, "Cancer is a deadly disease, but there is one community where this never occurs, it's the politicians! So if we want to fight cancer, we should become ministers."
Mr. Y.K.Sapru, Chairman Cancer Patients Aid Association says "The Hobby Ideas Women Achievers shows are one of the most prestigious events of the Cancer Patients Aid Association and have proved to be very beneficial for CPAA. It's a prestigious moment for the Indian fashion fraternity as 15 of its designers are selected to exhibit their collections at the esteemed Tranoi show at Paris. Ten designers from Delhi, three from Mumbai and two others from Kolkata have been invited to present the 'Made by Indians' fashion show at the Tranoi show in October. Tranoi is a trade show where the major international buyers of designer wear meet. Founder of the Tranoi show, Michael Hadida, used to personally pick up designers for the event and he was helped by Sumeet Nair, former Executive Director of Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). But later, Sumeet Nair had to quit due to allegations against him of pushing forward his favourite designers for this show.

Incidentally, the list made by Michael Hadida this time includes similar names which always made it to Sumeet Nair's list. A relieved Sumeet Nair said, "The truth is out and the victory is that of the Indian designers." According to Michael Hadida, "All the chosen designers are Tranoi favourites. The list is independent of any influence. Indian designers are authentic and have their own identity"

Another cheering news from Anil Chopra, Mumbai Fashion Week adviser, is that "Tranoi representatives will be at the LFW this Spring Summer- 09 season".

The ceremony was twofold-honoring, the craftsmanship, the designs & the beauty of the best in the gems & Jewelry industry, the Gems & Jewelry Export Promotion Council of India, also, honored the gems of India who have continually glowed in their chosen professions.

The icons who were awarded 'Solitaires of life' were Dev Anand, Suniel Shetty, Asha Parekh, Prahlad Kakkar, Ajit Wadekar and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

A unique theme has been chosen for this year's competition 'The Alluring Seasons- Summer, spring, Monsoon &Winter'. An additional category this year is for design of unconventional ornamentation such as spectacles, mobile phones, hair accessories, etc. There was also a design only category wherein participants were judged only on sketches.

This year over 52 companies presented an astounding array of nearly 109 entries for the competition. The judging took place in two phases & 5 distinguished judges from diverse backgrounds like Jewelry education, Jewelry design, art & fashion, picked 9 winning designs in all.

The IIGJ VISION-2008, the all-India Jewellery Design Competition is targeted towards the youth & aimed at discovering & encouraging fresh talent in Jewelry design.

The competition theme was "Fusion". Design entries in three categories- Casual or Day Wear, Evening or Party Wear & Bridal or Formal Wear.

Katrina, who plays Sonia, on the other hand, is a bubbly and joyful La student who tends to lose her cool at the sight of criminals.

Akshay Kumar is sent to Australia by the villagers to bring back his fellow villager, Lucky Singh. While on the look out Happy finds that Lucky actually is an underworld Don in Australia. Once, in an accident, Happy happens to save Lucky but unfortunately Lucky becomes paralyzed. Hence, Happy becomes the new King of the Australian Underworld.

The X factor of this movie is the distinctive portrayal of Sikhs. Kudos to Akshay Kumar who took to his turban with unconditional zest, which already is generating a fad amongst the youth. The turban or pagdi, has all of a sudden come in vogue. The credit must in fact be given to Sabina Khan for designing trendy and sophisticated turbans for Akshay Kumar in the movie. Even American rapper Snoop Dogg is seen wearing a turban for this movie.

Another element of this film which makes it a must-see is Katrina's style statement as she dons swanky creations by Manish Malhotra. Manish has once again proved that his caliber is unparalleled.

To put in a nutshell, Singh is Kinng gives the impression of a competent movie which is exceptional in its own sense. The initiative of rendering a never before image of a Sikh, depicting him vis-a-vis the stature of a King is surely eliciting the desired response from the audience. It depicts that the scenario is no more similar for the Sikhs who were regarded as bland in terms of fashion or style. It puts across a point that a Sikh too, can be a trendsetter. This message is very much evident in Narendra Kumar's recent collection shown in Lakme Fashion Week where he made his models put on turbans and walk the ramp.

Krishna Mehta's wonderland

Krishna Mehta took us on a world of wilderness with birds nesting, ready to display their plumage in a torrent of prints, embroideries, fabric effects and an abundant mixes of proportions. Peacocks, eagles, parrots and a love story of the princess who found the life she loves after meeting a prince.

A simple and magical theme which was beautifully executed with natural fabrics, minimal embroidery and more attention given to cuts and silhouettes. Krishna's garments were very global inspite of the prints and colors being inherently Indian and very easy to team with just anything.

The silhouettes and colors flow from taut and dark to flowy and light, symbolizing the darkness the princess lived in before she found the light of love. Cheesy explanation i know, but forgiven for the fine aesthetics of the collection.

Overlapped jackets, sherwanis, Angrakha, crisp high neck tunic shirts and taut detailed pants were juxtaposed with flowing empire line dresses with beautiful detailing on the yokes.

The colors were an enchanting mix of parrot blue, red, wine, chocolate brown and peach with an intriguing sheen in shine, satin and wispy transparencies.

At the start of the Spring Summer 2008 Collection of the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai, there were rave previews of the event being a platform for new talent. And on Tuesday, 16 Oct, this claim stood correct. Sponsored by Levi's, under the banner Gen Next, seven of India's most promising newfound talents, showcased their designs on the country's biggest ramp. Their designs were nothing short of interesting and intriguing. With fashion on their minds and India in their hearts, designers Agnimtra Paul and Soumitra Roy showcased their Spring Summer 08 collection at the Lakme Fashion Week here in Mumbai. It created a deep sense of reverence and honour for the nation.

Lakme Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2008-09 (March 9th to April 2nd)
A whirlwind of Fashion, style, petty controversies and a whole lot of jostling! But of course it had its share of glamour.
Maybe there's more hype for this event than the Wills Lifestyle hosted by the FDCI in Delhi but in terms of the designers showcasing, Bombay has many more emerging designers. Which was good considering the extremely talented show put on by some of them and the somewhat dismaying ones by some of the established ones.

Narendra Kumar's exciting and very innovative translations of mere fabrics into literally beautiful pieces of art adorning the body was fascinating.
The use of show stoppers and celebrities attending the show was rampant and maybe this is a whole new style in itself that the Indian fashion industry is evolving.

Towards the end of each show everybody is at the edge of the seat waiting for the drama to unfold. The Grand Finale done for Lakme this year by Wendell Rodricks was no different, with Jesse Randhawa alighting gracefully onto the ramp on a swing brought down right from the ceiling! For Neeta Lulla, Pria Kataria Puri and Sanjay Malhotra, the mainstay of their collection seemed to be embellishments, while Prriya and Chintan displayed a thoughtful use of the same, what with Sri Devi walking the ramp for them, they proved their point of being a label for the truly glamorous. Others hooked onto the trend of making fabric the hero of their collection. Rimzim Dadu created a clean and minimalist collection with exciting fabrics that she had developed herself, Asmita Marwa stunned us with her creative use of Kalamkari, an ancient Indian art form.

Chanderi, Maheshwari, Ikat and Warli were some of the unusual fabrics used by Gaba and Deepti Toor. Araiya created a range of lounge dresses, very chic but really faded in comparision to her experimental collection last year. The most ingenious use of fabrics and silhouettes was undoubtedly done by
Anuj Sharma who as an extension to his last year's line assembled garments of square pieces of cloth, only bound with eyelets.

There was no end and no beginning to his creations and it was all one smooth flow, added to this was his beautiful explanation that "one should treat fabric sensitively, it is the soul of the garment, and not cut it and stitch it any which way." He seemed to have caught the fancy of many including Mehr Castelinho, who was very impressed by him.

claiming to be in favor of Saving the Girl child, had an interesting use of printed fabric but his collection was made sour by the petty controversy of a two year old child, DJ, falling on the ramp.

While Raakesh Agarvwal's collection bordered on fetishism, Krishna Mehta and Nikasha, went the ethnic way with brilliantly executed garments as did of course Sabyasachi, the master of juxtaposing fabrics, this time adding tiny little stirring details. Nachiket Barve used applique work in a whole new way with rose cut being very prominent.

All's good that ends well, but did it really? Let's not forget the real objective behind the fashion week, how much sale did happen at the end of the day? According to Mehr Castelinho the most disappointing part of the fashion week is that the designers are very unorganized when it comes to business transactions. This was reinforced by one of the buyers from England who was extremely skeptical of placing orders citing the same reasons. On the other hand was an official from Aza who was pretty sure that he was packing up 'the best of the best.'
