Fashion Designer - Ritu Kumar

Ritu Kumar is one of India’s foremost fashion designer, who have developed a unique style of their own, reflecting the ancient traditions of Indian craftsmanship in a contemporary fashion. With a background of art history and musicology, which has enriched her horizons, Ritu Kumar’s understanding of ancient designs and the innovative use of traditional crafts has created a new classicism. Ritu holds the status of a revivalist in the Indian fashion industry, which has successfully bridged the gap between traditionalism and modernity.

Ritu, who began her work with four hand-block printers and two tables, in a small village near Calcutta thirty years ago, was the first woman to introduce the ’boutique’ culture in India under the brand name ‘Ritu’. Today she has twelve outlets in all major cities in India. Ritu Kumar’s boutiques feature a multifaceted showcase encompassing the very best of Indian design, with specially produced range of high fashion garments and accessories using silk, leather and cotton.

Ritu Kumar’s range of western and Indian apparel is all about traditions and individual talent, and women across the continents can easily identify with her vision of design.

Ritu has gone a long way to redefining the term ‘fashion‘ in the Indian context. Most importantly, she has demonstrated that handmade products can be as profitable as and even more glamorous than that of machine, and that Indian fashion is more than capable of holding on it’s own in the international arena of haute couture. Her couture is readily recognizable by its classicism, beauty and finesse. Her design philosophy is based on the premise that everything founded on good aesthetic, cuts across all borders-be they geographical, cultural or otherwise. This very aesthetic is the factor central to the Indian handwriting which underlies her creations. As the world truly becomes a global village, more and more of the elements that make up modern culture are taking on rich hues and ethnic tones. Pluralism is the mantra, while tastes are fast becoming eclectic, be it in music, arts, food or fashion. Within fashion, Indian techniques have increasingly commanded a premium for their creativity, style and finish. The Indian influence on contemporary wear is unmistakable.

In sync with these evolving trends, in April 2002, Ritu Kumar launched her new sub brand, ‘LABEL’. This is a reflection of modern and global trends that shape our lives today. ‘LABEL’ cater today’s woman, who is increasingly independent, discerning and global. It is a modern offering, focusing on the cut, color, drape and feel of the garment. This brand has a universal appeal aimed at today’s mobile lifestyle. It is fashionable, affordable and like all Ritu Kumar products, it is of the highest quality.

Indian Designers In Paris - fashionmoksh.com

It's a prestigious moment for the Indian fashion fraternity as 15 of its designers are selected to exhibit their collections at the esteemed Tranoi show at Paris. Ten designers from Delhi, three from Mumbai and two others from Kolkata have been invited to present the 'Made by Indians' fashion show at the Tranoi show in October. Tranoi is a trade show where the major international buyers of designer wear meet. Founder of the Tranoi show, Michael Hadida, used to personally pick up designers for the event and he was helped by Sumeet Nair, former Executive Director of Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). But later, Sumeet Nair had to quit due to allegations against him of pushing forward his favourite designers for this show.

Incidentally, the list made by Michael Hadida this time includes similar names which always made it to Sumeet Nair's list. A relieved Sumeet Nair said, "The truth is out and the victory is that of the Indian designers." According to Michael Hadida, "All the chosen designers are Tranoi favourites. The list is independent of any influence. Indian designers are authentic and have their own identity"

Another cheering news from Anil Chopra, Mumbai Fashion Week adviser, is that "Tranoi representatives will be at the LFW this Spring Summer- 09 season".

FOOTWEAR TIPS FOR MONSOON

Come monsoon season and everybody has to rake their brains as to what to put on and step out of the house. Be it clothes or footwear- everyone has to compromise in terms of dressing up not according to what looks best on them but as per the showers allow them.

Rainy season is not a good time for the fashion enthusiasts as it dampens their spirits of donning their best outfits and footwear. Footwear, especially, is taken much care of. It’s very essential as the right kind of footwear helps us to tread through those frustrating potholes and muddy puddles. Here are some apt must-have footwear’s which will help you through this dreaded season:

If you are sporting a knee-length skirt or a Capri then you can opt for flip-flops or flats provided that it is raining moderately otherwise your legs will be beautified with mud stains.

If you are planning to go traditional by wearing a saree or churidar then slip into sandals and make sure they have an ankle strap to keep them firmly fitted to your feet.

Fashion lovers can go for slip-resistant sandals with heels but of not more than 2 inches with ankle straps to walk comfortably on slippery and uneven roads. Aside from the ever-popular ballet flats, Crocs has introduced several new models that even fashion-savvy girls will love, so you don’t have to squirm every time someone looks at your feet when you’re wearing them.

Option for men could be knee- high gumboots, sport sandals.

Shoes such as sports and canvas are a strict no-no for this season as there are chances of bacterial growth due to the moisture in the climate.

Do not wear much of leather footwear as they too have the tendency of sheltering bacteria and fungus. If it is necessary to wear leather footwear during rainy season, feet should not be slipped in and out of the shoes directly, and must be opened only by the laces. Socks are a must; even if they get wet as they act as a barrier between the skin and the leather

If possible, shell out a few more bucks and buy branded footwear such as Puma, Reebok, Nike, Adidas, Liberty which will not slip from your feet and are designed to endure such harsh weathers.
Even if it brings along infuriating moments with it, rainy season, on the other hand, is also the time when you are at the peak of emotions. If taken optimistically, one can thoroughly enjoy this pleasant weather by following a few guidelines as above and celebrate monsoons without any compromises. So, wipe out all those apprehensions from your minds, step out and enjoy the showers!!
